Fourth Night [Action/Voice, Backdated to April 12th]

[Action]

[Naoya and Dilandau are safely behind bars in the tunnels, secured and locked away with no weapons.   And right now he made sure to take every key to the prisons and secure the entrance with a padlock of his own.  It should be strong enough to hold anyone attempting to break them out for now.

First thing's first.  He needs to track down the woman named Yuzu that Naoya spoke to.  She did not sympathize with him, but knows of him and his weapon system.  Possessing Dilandau's COMP, he will actively seek her out for questioning and follow up on any leads he can.]

[Voice]

[After speaking with Yuzu and following up where the leads take him, Batman will reluctantly open a voice communication.  Someone has to make the announcement.   He's not much of a talker and he's never been good with people.  But it needs to be done.]

Attention, citizens of Luceti.  Dilandau and Naoya have been detained in the murder of Kohaku, a fellow citizen of Luceti.   They will remain in custody until such a time that the people of this village agree on a just punishment or until they are properly tried by a court of law.   That is all.

[...Nu-13. One of those individuals listed as dangerous. Though thankfully, she has been inactive as a threat recently. Batman intends to keep it that way.]

Mob mentality and reactionary instincts are not just. The courts exist to ensure people are treated fairly and are given the proper chance to defend themselves against charges brought against them.

[That might help... but in a place like this, would anyone honestly dare to defend someone people think of as a criminal? And besides...]

But... There are no courts in Luceti, are there...?

[Voice]

[identity profile] cowledcrusader.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not yet. But that does not mean there cannot be.

Even if there was... Would it even be possible to arrange a proper trial...? [Because she's getting the feeling it isn't.]

I have little doubt. Most people in Luceti are good, decent, reasonable individuals who would respect the principles of democracy and law.

[Good, decent, reasonable individuals? From her point of view, that's very doubtful.]

...But nobody would... be willing to defend someone accused of being guilty. [At the very least, she certainly can't think of anyone like that right now.]

It is not a popular job. But people do it in worlds with courts. If no one volunteers, something will be done. A trial without proper representation is little more than a sham.

[...Huh. What's with the sudden filter...?]

Then... a trial held in this world will likely be a sham. [Or at the very least, that strikes her as the most likely scenario.]

[...Just like you, Nu, the Batman is paranoid.]

If we cannot find representation. But I believe we can.

How interested are you in justice, Nu?

[Heh. Can't blame him for that, I suppose.]

Justice is... also a part of destiny. [That's as much as she's willing to say, though.]

[Cryptic. It's not an answer he likes. But it's an answer he'll accept, grudgingly. He doesn't think it makes logical sense, but he's not going to antagonize her either.]

I see.

[It'd likely make more sense if he was familiar with what she believes is destined to happen, but that's something she'd much rather keep to herself right now.

...There's something she's curious about, though.]

...Was... that murder the only reason as to why the criminals were detained? [That's what it sounded like to her, but asking for a confirmation can't hurt, can it?]

[ ... ]

...But nobody else was... detained for committing a crime in this world before, right?. [Not as far as she knows, at least. And this, combined with the news about what happened to the Remnants as well as something else she noticed... well, it bothers her, to say the least.]

There is a man referred to as "the Medic" who once committed murder by vivisection of another citizen named Klonoa. The Medic was detained by certain members of the Blue Rogues and held in a cell similar to the ones Dilandau and Naoya are in.

He was eventually released. He currently resides in the village.

...I see. But... there have been to attempts to detain the other known criminals, have there...?

Prior to the Medic's incident, it seems offenses against other villagers were rare and were resolved on a case by case basis. It was after summer of last year when violent crimes became increasingly common.

[Summer of last year, huh... This sounds like it might be worth keeping in mind.]

And... despite the increase in violent crimes, the only one the villagers took action against until recently was the Medic...? [That's what it sounds like to her, at least...]

Of course not.

But... several known criminals have yet to be detained or eliminated. If... the villagers did take action against them, then...

...Did... they fail?
[That has to be it, right? If they really did try to do something about them, anyway...]
