cowledcrusader: (Looking Down)

[Action]

[Naoya and Dilandau are safely behind bars in the tunnels, secured and locked away with no weapons.   And right now he made sure to take every key to the prisons and secure the entrance with a padlock of his own.  It should be strong enough to hold anyone attempting to break them out for now.

First thing's first.  He needs to track down the woman named Yuzu that Naoya spoke to.  She did not sympathize with him, but knows of him and his weapon system.  Possessing Dilandau's COMP, he will actively seek her out for questioning and follow up on any leads he can.]

[Voice]

[After speaking with Yuzu and following up where the leads take him, Batman will reluctantly open a voice communication.  Someone has to make the announcement.   He's not much of a talker and he's never been good with people.  But it needs to be done.]

Attention, citizens of Luceti.  Dilandau and Naoya have been detained in the murder of Kohaku, a fellow citizen of Luceti.   They will remain in custody until such a time that the people of this village agree on a just punishment or until they are properly tried by a court of law.   That is all.

...properly tried?

[Now there's a pleasant surprise. As Dilandau's original warning was locked from him, Ginko has only just caught up with unfolding events. Mildly--]

...and what exactly makes for justice in a world without death-- where "detainment" is just a prison within a prison?

[Having just figured out the voice function by this point, Rorschach decides to respond and test it out.]

Good. Criminals should not go unpunished. Should not slip through cracks of justice system. Should pay for their sins. [He'd rather have them dead so they can't harm anyone again, but arrested is acceptable... barely.]

Society cannot expect to function without just punishment for those who would hurt others. The important thing is the people must decide what the law is. And therefore the proper punishment.

And imprisoned though we are, that fact does not change. Judgement is not mine to pass. I bring criminals to face their judgement in the eyes of their peers.

[Yuzu's not so hard to find today, for someone like Batman anyway. She's in the Brigade HQ, alone, working on Haruki's latest busywork for her - producing advertising fliers. Since a copy machine hasn't fallen into Luceti yet she's working steadily to make each one by hand. It's a tiring task after the first few and that may be why the message is rather.... colloquial, so to speak.]

A "just punishment?" What would you personally consider a "just punishment?"

As far as I'm concerned, they can rot in the tunnels for eternity.

[Especially Dilandau.]

It's not my place to decide what justice is.

And yet it was your place to bring those people into custody?

If it's not "your place," then whose place is it? The Malnosso's?

[He listens to this statement with some interest. What a thing to say.]

I'd be curious to see the people here decide together on anything-- let alone the penalty for murder.

You bring criminals to face judgment--hnn. It sounds like you're speaking of a world with a function system of justice. But...what do you intend to do with them here? Imprison them indefinitely?

[And Batman will silently sneak in through a window in the ajoining room. Thankfully, it's dark enough in here to cover his entrance. ...There she is, in the next room. He'll slowly approach the door before he speaks.]

Miss Yuzu Tanikawa?

[...When she looks up, his outline will likely be visible. He's not trying to hide. Much.]

The police do not pass judgement when they arrest suspects. The courts do.

...The people.

Not for me to decide. And I would hope it would not come to something like that.

[He doesn't want to have to traipse back and forth to the tunnels delivering meals every day forever, anyway.

Right...

I'm surprised they haven't devised a justice system yet. We've been plagued by the likes of Yuber, Kefka, and Aku for months now, and then these murders. But then again, what good would a justice system do for them when they possess the powers that they do?

...A justice system works regardless of how powerful a criminal may be. It is simply those who would enforce the law who need aid.

You only need the right people for it. Something Luceti is in no short supply of.

So what do you intend to do? Were you collaborating with someone to bring them in?

[a disgruntled sigh, followed by a pause and he draws up an unhackable filter]

This ...isn't really any of my business.

But I've spoken with Dilandau on a few occasions-- and it honestly surprised me that he went through with murder, here. Especially of a woman, although he seemed to have some odd loathing for angels.

[a pause] Even though it's clear that he has some free will of his own-- his mind is broken. I was informed by someone from his world that he was subjected to experimentation as a child.

For as much of this is his own fault...the idea that he's being used as a tool for murder by more intelligent individuals ....it doesn't sit well with me.

I acted alone.

I'm aware of Dilandau's mental instability, but I was not aware of its source. But rest assured. Naoya will not walk simply because Dilandau was the one who committed the act.

Society unfit to make such decisions. Easily corrupted by fear or greed. Juries threatened or bribed, criminals escape. Perpetuates cycle of violence. Captors should decide, not public whose opinions are altered easily.
